ADVENTURE MUMMA
LONGING FOR LONGREACH

Longreach had always been on our radar as a destination to go if we did ‘Outback’ Queensland. The Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the Qantas Founders Museum being top of the list for the kids.

As it turned out, this little outback town was made even greater by our adventures with Kinnon & Co – a family run business that incorporates a variety of hands-on experiences for those who really want to get a feel for life as it used to be in these country towns. Kinnon & Co started 6 years ago when the family had to sell all off all of their cattle due to drought conditions and find another way to make a living.

Thanks to Kinnon & Co we enjoyed a cruise down the Thomson River at sunset, a stockman’s camp meal with billy tea and damper, some old time movies, an iconic stage-coach ride just like in the Cobb & Co days and an ‘Old Time Tent Show’. They also do a range of accommodation which we would have definitely checked out if we didn’t have the trusty Winnebago Pink Minnie on our travels.

All activities were run by the Kinnon family and their laconic Aussie wit shone through as they had us, and the rest of the audience in stiches.

The other highlight was of course our Happy Hour held at the Woolshed at the Longreach Tourist Park. The Woolshed was definitely a ‘hot’ venue for people staying in Longreach and each night resident musicians took to the stage to entertain and get many of the travellers on the dance floor and kicking up their heels.

We were lucky enough to have Graham Rogers (who has written songs for Slim Dusty and won a string of awards including the Golden Guitar) to add some tunes and some extra ‘flavour’ to our Happy Hour. Along with Noel (the park manager) and Josh flippin’ sausages and Charlie manning the merchandise and raffle stall we managed to raise a total of $463.90 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Later the restaurant opened its doors, the band ‘Carizma’ took to the stage and a few of the crowd finished off a good night by taking to the dance floor. One thing we’ll really miss about Outback Queensland is all the great ‘live’ shows that travellers can get involved in and the awesome sunsets and sunrises that we’ve enjoyed throughout the journey. If you haven’t made the journey out that way yet, then do it soon.…
